5 problems of Hyper Converged Infrastructure

Hyper-converged is believed to be the solution for all data center problems. While it brings a higher degree of flexibility, scalability and reduction in cost, there are certain crucial problems associated with Hyper Converged Infrastructure that are ignored. As a Hyper Converged Infrastructure or HCI OEM, we generally speak only about the advantages/benefits of HCI not the problems of Hyper Converged Infrastructure. We can’t blame ourselves, because we were never questioned about what are the potential problems in the hyper converged solutions by our customers. 

 As a HCI vendor, it becomes important to show the users what are the problems/disadvantages associated with Hyper converged infrastructure, to what extent one can compromise/ ignore these problems, and how one can make a conscious decision if he should move to hyper converged or not.

The following are a few of the most common everyday problems of Hyper Converged Infrastructure faced by most of the IT managers & System administrators globally. 

Vendor Lock In:

Enterprises who plan for hyper converged infrastructure can choose one of the 2 approaches – integrated appliance or hardware agnostic. A hardware agnostic/ software-only approach allows customers to get HCI deployed on a bring-your-own-technology basis. Integrated appliance restricts the buyer to a reference architecture, where the hardware/software is created and delivered by a single vendor. If the HCI user cannot transition to a competitor’s product/ service either completely or partially then he is in a Vendor lock in situation. 

A fast-growing hi-tech organization doesn’t want to be hamstrung by inflexibility caused by vendor lock-in. As the company evolves, technology used also evolves.

Not suitable for small scale environments:

The key thing about hyper converged is that we need at least 3 nodes to build a Hyper Converged Infrastructure and this translates into several hundreds of virtual machines . This can scale up to as large as 16-32 nodes. Hyper converged Infrastructure is not a cost effective solution for the small scale environments who has as low as requirement of 10-20 virtual machines.  Since hyper converged infrastructure is one time lumpsum investment, it is not advised for small scale environments to invest if they don’t have plans to upscale in the near future.

Low performance in high load jobs:

One of the main problems of Hyper converged solution arises from exactly what makes it the best solution for regular or small workloads. In fact, HCI is not designed for real time applications with high IOPS like big data, Artificial intelligence etc. HCI may also not be suitable for Storage centric applications like security applications which captures large amount of data in real time . 

This problem might be of secondary importance today, but when there is a radical change in the capacity of workload and application requirements this can be a major hindrance of innovation and change in the organizations.

Inefficiency due to under utilization of resources:

The biggest challenge in HCI is that storage, compute and network are the building blocks and the problem associated with this is that certain amount of compute always comes with a certain amount of storage.If the enterprise underestimates its storage needs and chooses an integrated HCI appliance, then the enterprise needs to add additional nodes to increase the storage.However this comes with an additional compute which might not be necessary for the organizations needs. This makes HCI inefficient for the organizations who didn’t think ahead about the future workload requirements and the future growth in data while planning for HCI.

No GPU Cards:

The problem associated with most of the Hyper Converged Infrastructure solution is that most of the solutions may not support GPU cards. The organizations where 3D and accelerated graphics is the main source of function, then HCI does not support adding GPU cards to the nodes that are running virtual machines. 

HCI definitely doesn’t fix all the problems. HCI has problems in itself. But well, the common consensus is that there is no other better solution than HCI.
